I am a BFA, Certified Art Instructor, award winning retired art teacher and artist. I was a fixture in public school art education in Tucson, AZ, for over 30 years. Since moving to Port Townsend six years ago I have participated in the PT Wearable Art Show, winning Honorable Mention in 2014 and Best in Show/People’s Choice in 2015. My vast experience working with every age and ability group makes learning art exciting, easy and fun!
Why are you an artist? Where that inner compulsion to create comes from I cannot say, but I have followed it faithfully ever since I can remember. For me, art is more about creative problem solving than anything – how will I mix that color I need, what pose will depict the expression I want, where will the light shine on the subject, what medium would best express my idea, how do I communicate a good story to the viewer? The satisfaction I feel when I have created something that successfully solves a problem is beyond explanation. It is everything to me, an avenue of discovery about myself and life in general.
Why do you think art is important? Art can teach people things they don’t already know, about themselves, other people and the world around them. It is a universal language that speaks to the experience, past, present and future, of the human race.
