REGISTRATION DEADLINE: JUNE 5, 2019

WATERCOLOR (or OIL) UNLEASHED! (other Water-Media welcome)

Learn to make water look wet, reflective and splashy! Painting water that looks wet requires some basic knowledge of the dynamics of how water moves and how objects are reflected in its mirror surface. Techniques will be demonstrated to address the various puzzles with which the artist is faced when painting this stunning, fascinating and challenging subject!

ON LOCATION:

One day will be spent “photo-sketching”, sketching and 'light' plein air painting/color-sketching (using minimal plein air equipment – suggested supply list will be provided) at a nearby location, with follow-up studio painting on following day/s. (In the case of inclement weather, reference photos will be supplied, or you may use your own.)

STUDIO lessons will focus on:

  • The “anatomy” of a waterfall: cascading water splashing over rocks and boulders

  • Reflections

  • Negative painting applied to all media

  • Creative use of color – using color as value

  • For WATER-MEDIA: "Acrylic Underpinnings" (as seen in Julie’s North Light Book and 2 Videos) to set the stage for vibrant colors (The small amount of acrylic necessary for this technique will be provided.)

  • For OIL: "Acrylic Underpinnings" can also be used for oil if desired PLUS traditional methods, brush- and knife-work

There will be demos, instruction at all levels as needed, critique and lots of painting time. All levels are welcome and encouraged to attend. The only prerequisite is an attitude of joy in the act of painting. Class time will be structured, yet open enough to accommodate the artistic spirit within us all!

About Julie Gilbert Pollard

Author of three North Light books, Watercolor Unleashed (2013), Discover Oil Painting (2016) and Brilliant Color (oil & acrylic – 2009), plus three Watercolor Unleashed videos, two Acrylic Unleashed videos and four Oil Painting Unleashed videos for ArtistsNetwork.com (formerly North Light), and featured in Splash 18 and AcrylicWorks 3, Julie has taught watercolor and oil classes for over 30 years. While glowing, brilliant color in a format of painterly realism is her personal painting objective, her goal when teaching is to assist in the search for the individual artistic personality of each student, leaning heavily on the fundamentals of art as the gateway to fulfilling personal expression and intuitive painting. “We all have a glowing, yet elusive, mental and emotional visualization of what we long to express in paint, she says. Just remember that your skills must catch up with that vision!” Julie presents the necessary “nuts & bolts” material in a logical, practical manner, along with large doses of encouragement, with emphasis on personal taste and goals.

Skill Level for Participants

Regarding SKILL LEVEL: I prefer for each student to “self-place” because some people just starting out pick up the skills very quickly and can actually be quite advanced while others who have painted for years and may even have studied from numerous instructors can often remain at a lower skill level. The material in some classes might seem to be more suitable for “intermediate to advanced” but as far as I’m concerned, beginning-level students are always welcome, especially if they have a passion for a particular subject. They may be more advanced in their studies than they realize and even if not, passion counts for a lot! And of course, we are ALL at different places in that continually shifting learning curve!
