The Yin & Yang of Design Using Negative Painting with Kathy Constantine, September 15

The Yin & Yang of Design Using Negative Painting with Kathy Constantine, September 15

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 9 AM-4 PM

Negative painting is an intriguing, alternative approach in which the subject is established by painting around the object rather than by painting the object itself. Most painters work in the positive, typically adding one shape on top of another. In this case, we will first create images (all over the board) that will appear in the subject (person, animal, place or object) of the painting, after muting the area around it. We will selectively choose what shows completely, what shows partly and what mostly disappears.

In this class, students will create a background using acrylic paints and a variety of mark-making tools such as:

  • Handmade stamps (will make in class)

  • Stencils (small patterns, either brought by student or the ones provided by the instructor)

  • Miscellaneous texture and mark-making tools (brought by students or the ones provided by the instructor)

  • Text on transparent tissue (some provided by instructor; others can be made in the class)

  • Gold leaf (some provided by instructor)

After completing a strong background, students will either use a template or free-form drawing to lightly sketch some forms over the background, which will finally become the foreground images, after the rest of the space (around the forms) is  push/pull painted with semi-transparent gesso and/or paint. This results in a negative painting where the subject is revealed by painting around it in silhouette fashion.
