Techniques for Success in Watercolor with Shirley Mercer, September 12-October 3



Technique will be our focus in this four-week watercolor class. Using the class project image supplied, you will experiment with the following:

Using value to create shape and distance
Color mixing
Creating a focal point from a photo
Preserving the "white" of the paper

Students may expect class demos and one-on-one instruction. Materials are available for purchase directly from the instructor. If using your own supplies, please consult the supply list or contact Shirley Mercer to determine the suitability of your paper and paints. E-mail Shirley at


Paints - Daniel Smith

  • 1. Indigo

  • 2. Cobalt

  • 3. Quinacridone Gold

  • 4. Permanent Alizarin Crimson

  • 5. Van Dyck Brown

Brushes - Watercolor quality (My choices are listed in parentheses)

  • 1. Large flat 1-1/2" or 2". (Princeton Neptune)

  • 2. # 6 or 8 round with fine-pointed end. 3. #1 or 2 Script or Rigger

  • 4. 1/4" or 1/2" flat with chisel edge (a good synthetic watercolor brush)

Paper - Fabriano Artistico

  • 1. 1/4 sheet of 140 lb cold pressed


  • 1. Palette (watercolor)

  • 2. Backer board (I recommend gator board)

  • 3. Pencil ****

  • 4. kneaded eraser

  • 5. paper towels ****

  • 6. straight edge ****

  • 7. water container ****

  • 8. fine-mist spray bottle

Items marked with **** are household items and do not need to be ordered from an art supply store.

Additional (optional) color choices for the more advanced artists. REDS: Perylene Maroon, Mayan Red, Opera Pink Yellows: Naples Yellow, Aureleon Yellow, Hansa Yellow Other: Jadeite Green, Ultramarine Turquoise, Electric Blue, Undersea Green, Burnt Sienna, Ultramarine Blue.

If you are new to watercolor You may use MY materials for an extra charge of $15 for the class, which covers everything you need. That way, you can "try it out" before you buy all these supplies. You may go online to for an easy supply list. Highlight ARTIST RESOURCES and click on TEACHER/STUDENT SUPPLY LISTS. Click on the STUDENTS Find Lists Tab. Type Shirley Mercer Art in the search field. I’ve included what you will need (except for paper.) You may buy your paper from me. (I will sell you a single sheet. Or you can purchase 10 at a time from Jerrys.)
