Plein Air for painters in oils or acrylics. Competent drawing skills are recommended.

Plein Air painting was established by the Impressionists and continues to be arguably the most popular painting style of all time. It continues to captivate and challenge painters of all levels of expertise. It is always done outdoors and is an offshoot of Alla prima painting which is Italian for “at the first” or “at once”. It represents the technique of direct painting. Specifically, it has come to mean finishing a painting in one shot. The success or failure of the results rides on the inspiration of the moment and the skill of the artist. It calls for a totality of vision, seeing the “whole picture” in a simplified way. It requires discipline and an economy of technique so as to say more with less. It’s challenging but so satisfying when you pull it off. Hopefully, with the advent of spring we will be able to get outside to practice this form of painting. Luckily, Fort Worden has plenty of deep porches to work from if the weather is not totally cooperative.

Bring all the equipment you need to work outside. Remember aprons, umbrellas, lunch, snacks and sun screen!
