Narrative Ideas & Practice with Ginny Banks, January 10-February 7

“When people look at my pictures I want them to feel the way they do when they want to read a line of a poem twice.” – Robert Frank

“You don't make a photograph just with a camera. You bring to the act of photography all the pictures you have seen, the books you have read, the music you have heard, the people you have loved.”

Ansel Adams

Unlike other types of photography, such as landscape and portraiture, narrative photography tells a story or suggests a sequence resulting in a cohesive body of work. This exploratory workshop will focus on students photographing what moves them personally and be introduced to elements of design and how they can apply these elements to improve their compositions. There will be guided exercises that help facilitate this process along with a field trip. Students will also write a story line to accompany their images. Students will get photos printed for sharing and discussion each week.

Supplies: Manual digital or film camera, memory card and three-ring binder.
