SATURDAY & SUNDAY, JUNE 16 & 17, 10 AM-4 PM

In this two-day workshop, you will develop a flexible set of applique techniques perfect for translating shapes and simple imagery into textile art. We'll start by looking at how American folk artists and 20th century modern artists emphasize color and shape in their compositions. Then, using a basic grid and a color theory cheat-sheet, we will create 12x12” textiles in hand-dyed cottons and wools in warm and cool tones. Threads in rich neutrals will be provided, as will the recommended needles, pins, and pattern transfer materials. A few decorative embroidery and quilting stitches will also be modeled. You will leave class with 1-2 finished compositions ready to display as wall-hangings, or finish as a tote or pillow. Note: All work is done by hand! All levels welcome.

PLEASE BRING TO CLASS:

  • sharp scissors; ideally small embroidery scissors, but sharpness is more important than size,
  • a sketchbook, pencil/pen.
  • Optional -- natural fiber textiles or found textiles/scraps.
