In this workshop, it is my hope to introduce you to literary techniques, those very techniques fiction writers, poets and essayists use to compose their work—work that is compelling, thoughtful and written with purpose. However, in this workshop, you will use those very techniques to explore a truth, and in doing so, you will begin to embark on the beginnings of a Memoir.

By artfully and carefully choosing personal moments that speak to, or reflect upon, larger, universal issues, your readers will come to understand what is going on outside the parameters you provide as a writer, by what is expressed within the frame you have constructed. In essence, all good writing comes from a place we cannot name, but is our own. And it is through this exploration, that we begin to better understand ourselves.

We will read works essays and excerpts from memoirists such as, Cheryl Strayed, Mary Karr, Ruth Reichl and Glennon Doyle Melton. We will explore their work as writers, ask writerly questions, and begin to see how these writers choose a frame, where they place it contextually, and what, as readers, we can learn from this placement—this widow through which larger issues explode and are explored.

In this class, you will also become editors, accountable not only to your own writing, but to each other’s as well. Editing and revising are the two most important tools in writing. As such, this workshop requires dedication to the craft, yourself as an artist/writer, and to each other.

It is my hope, at this workshop’s end, your writing will be borne of new places and perspectives. And with this, a true, authentic voice will emerge, one that will tell a story with integrity and grace, the power of gritty details, and the ability to inspire, intrigue and compel the reader through a written piece that is of worth not only to yourselves, but the audience it speaks to.
