TUESDAY & WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 1-2, 9 AM-4 PM

No matter what medium or style of art you embrace in your work, there is probably no more essential concept to learn than that of using correct values. Accurate drawing, composition and application of color are all very important but a full range of values from dark to light in an artwork is what will elevate it and make it work. In this 2 day workshop you will learn to tackle this often illusive concept. Much as a dish simply needs salt to complete it, getting your values right has the same effect on your art. Yet it is often hard to actually see relative darkness and lightness when you are also looking at color. Throughout the two days, Chris will fully explain and answer any questions you have about the mystery of values. She will share examples of artwork exhibiting accurate and inaccurate use of them. You will learn tricks to help limit the seeming infinite range of “grays” between black and white. Working from provided imagery and reference material, you will practice seeing and accurately recording the salt and pepper of making art. There will be lots of smudgy work so wear clothes you don’t care about. Bring your art kit. All drawing and painting mediums are welcome.
