TUESDAYS, JANUARY 9-FEBRUARY 6, 1 PM-4 PM

Working in chalk pastel falls somewhere between drawing and painting. The artist handles the medium as a drawing tool but uses the principles of painting to execute the finished piece. It's immediacy, wide range of luscious colors and ease of application make it accessible to artists of all levels. A respected medium in it's own right, it also functions as a great way to move towards painting in oils or acrylics.

Chris Witkowski has created many fine art pieces using pastel and has also built a career exclusively using pastel for her illustration work. Join her for this five week class in the basics of using chalk pastels. Through sampling, demos and lectures, you will learn about different types of pastels: Pastel pencils, hard to soft pastels (including different brands), the many substrates and supports available and how to protect your art. And, of course, how to create a gorgeous richly colored pastel!

Competent drawing skills are needed for this class.

SUPPLIES:
A $10 materials fee to be paid directly to instructor on the first day of class.
Students should bring:
Any chalk pastels you already have. I primarily use hard pastels for most of my work, reserving soft pastels for highlights and finishing touches, and I will have many for you to try. If you are starting from scratch I recommend Prismacolor NuPastel sets. The full set of 96 colors is preferable, but nothing less than the set of 48 colors for this class.  DickBlick.com is a good source or Olympic Art & Office, where you can receive a 10% discount for PTSA students.

Instructor will provide paper to work on and a portfolio to transport your work.

Please bring the following:

  • a dust mask to wear during class
  • protective/rubber gloves and wear clothes you don't care about or an apron
  • a drawing board and clips
