Earth Alchemy: Create Amazing Depth & Texture with Unusual Materials with Sandra Duran Wilson, June 25-28, 2019

TUESDAY-FRIDAY, JUNE 25-28, 2019, 10 AM - 4 PM

I love texture and ancient organic ones are the best. Think of metals with gorgeous patinas like copper, rusted metals, crackled surfaces with gloss and grit too. Now we will learn how to apply them to any surface. We’ll put them on fabric, paper, plastic and panels. We will explore materials that are sourced from unusual places such as the home improvement store, the fabric store, the kitchen and the office supply store. I will share how to use acrylic gels, pastes and mediums to expand your texture vocabulary while saving tons of money on paints. Color is my thing and I will give you the three best tips for creating vibrant colors. Learn how to create mood using composition and values and find the narrative within the abstract forms. We begin with playful exercises that will free your creative soul to explore new directions into abstract reasoning.

Day 1

Scribble to structure-Let your playful side have a field day and then discover the structure within the chaos. You will learn color mixing, values, mark-making, composition, transparent and opaque paint qualities and collage techniques.

Day 2

Ancient Guides-Open the tool chest to find new sources for inspiration. Home-improvement products meet up with fabrics and crackles abound. We will create crackles on fabric and paper.

Day 3

Glow and fuse-Working with gold leaf has never been easier when you create skins from the leaf. You will be able to cut them into any size and shape. Working with sheer fabrics and combining with texture surfaces makes for a beautiful painting. The secret texture pow will come by first class mail, Tyvek is very versatile and an absolute must for the textures it can deliver.

Day 4

Combine your new-found skills and use them to explore your process. Free yourself from the judgement of the internal critic and allow yourself to create with wild abandon. Help and encouragement are provided.

Each day will have demos, time to work and a review of art along with Q/A.

2 sheets 24”x18” mixed media paper or watercolor paper that has been gessoed on both sides. You may fold them in half to fit into your suitcase. Please do this before arriving if possible. We won’t take extra time to do it in class. I use Canson Mixed Media paper either 98 or 138 lb.

Markers, colored pencils, scissors and a few collage papers you may wish to use

Elmers glue all

Golden or Liquitex Regular gel gloss small container

Golden Polymer Medium Gloss

Synthetic brushes-I like taklon sets that include a flat, fan, angle, round and a liner. Here is a link.

Stepped handle, or trowel palette knife plastic or metal

Painting palette-I find it is easy to use coated paper plates. We will be working wet, so flat palettes may not work for all processes.

Spray bottle for water

Spray bottle for alcohol

Container for water/brushes

Paper towels, apron

Heat gun – optional
