Perspective can be a daunting and confusing technique with a vocabulary all its own, yet nearly every artist uses perspective in their work. With an understanding of perspective, we can gain a better understanding of a picture’s structure and express in our work. Perspective is not an exact science: it is a system of making judgments about the graphical world.

We will explore the vocabulary of perspective and how it applies to what we draw. Then we will work through a series of exercises to understand how perspective affects our drawings. Each session will include lecture and exercises. This class will be devoted to understanding perspective, rather than completing specific pieces. There will be no expectation to finish drawings, but there will be plenty to work on!

 Exercises will include;

  • Working from a plan to a one point perspective drawing.

  • Working from a building picture on a two point perspective drawing.

  • Exploring inclining and declining planes in three point perspective drawing.

  • Draw a Victorian building with all its weird angles.

  • If there is time, there will be additional exercises

Supplies List

  • 18x24-inch drawing paper

  • 1 waterproof ink pen

  • Mechanical pencil

  • 12” or ruler

ABOUT RICK

There is one constant in my life and that is change. Meeting new people, moving, learning, and traveling is life’s adventure to me. I have been drawing and painting as long as I can remember. I spent hours drawing dragons, comic characters, and so much other fantastic stuff. Art has always been in my life and recently it has become the focus. My wife and I recently took 2 years off to travel. Then we moved to Port Townsend in 2016 and I attended The Northwest School of Wooden Boat Building. The traveling and school made me realize how much of my life is informed by what I create. Drawing is my kinesthetic approach to learning about the world around me. I love detail and process so I attempt to show both in my work.
